"And the award goes to. . ." Each year, our students have the opportunity to vote for the favorite kid's book in Pennsylvania. Unlike national awards bestowed by the American Library Association, actual students nominate the books on the Pennsylvania Young Readers' Choice Awards (PYRCA).
Our students are voracious readers and are always up for a challenge.
Participating in the PYRCA is an anticipated event each year as is the voting in March. Since our school is both a middle and high school, we have students selecting from both lists. Prior to the voting, we can share what we've read in book talks and, of course, celebrate the announcement of the winning favorites in April with a red carpet event. Our students are high achieving in a school with limited resources and funding. They have varied reading interests and appreciate a good book and their school library. PYRCA is a great way to celebrate the joy of reading.
My Project
Participants in PYRCA need to read at least three titles from their respective lists (middle/young adult) to be eligible to vote for their favorite book. We use the books on the list in various ways: teachers use them for read aloud and students use them for book talks or as the subject for book trailers. In March, students pick up their ballots at the library. The results are sent to a central location and tallied. In April, the winning books are announced. All participating students are invited to a celebration where our particular school's favorite titles and the state winners (sometimes it is the same) walk down the red carpet. Each student receives a bookmark and certificate acknowledging their participation in PYRCA.
Though we have a few of the titles on the PYRCA list on our library shelves, we need all of them to make this project a success.
This year, we have no budget for library books, so the only way we can vote and be counted is through the generosity of others. Please help us promote a love of reading among our hard working, appreciative students!
