Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our high school serves around 2700 students each year. Seventy-eight percent of those students are from low income homes. Our students lead busy lives. In addition to regular course work, they are involved in many different activities on campus such as sports, music, dance, art, advanced classes, clubs, and organizations. Many students also work after school jobs to help support their families or babysit younger siblings while their parents are at work. On top of everything our students do in their busy lives, we ask them to read for pleasure. There are many benefits of reading for pleasure beyond improving the skills associated with reading, such as relaxation and fun. Pleasure reading also has social benefits by improving empathy and giving the reader insight into the world views of others. We ask our students to read and log their pages into the Beanstack system. All students who meet the 200 pages per 6 week goal are entered into a prize drawing, We would like to also reward readers who participate in our other reading challenges and library contests.

With your help, we can award prizes to our reading students.

The products we have placed in our cart will allow the students to choose the prize that means the most to them. We have chosen items that will appeal to a wide range of students, from readers to artists to builders and more.
