Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students want to see and understand the world. They want to read. Many are interested in the arts, travel, and sports. They want to be an example to their younger siblings.

Our overarching goal is to develop struggling readers into those who can read a variety of texts, at grade level, for learning or pleasure.

As the Literacy Interventionist, my responsibility is to lead the instruction that helps our students achieve this goal.

Our campus is a Tier 2 school, meaning we are focused on supporting student growth through small group instruction and targeted intervention. Many texts available to our students do not commonly focus on foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, spelling, and so on. We need decodable texts to accomplish this. I am requesting non-fiction and fiction phonics reader sets for my intervention courses. We have seen the impact on student reading and testing in schools. This year, I want to emulate more of the best practices seen around the district by making use of these supplies.

My instructional practices will not be limited to my four walls. As a campus leader and interventionist, I am also responsible for teaching and guiding my colleagues in these same practices to provide opportunities for all of our children. These books will help us do just that.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
