Reading Center for Struggling Readers and English Language Learners

Help me give my students reading skills support, provide social emotional support at a critical time period and help students "see themselves" in school. The modular couch provides space where students can read comfortably, and build class community.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love about my students is that they love to learn and try very hard. My students are special because they are wonderful students and want to learn.

The Modular Couch will help students focus on the task at hand (learning to understand what they read.) The modular couch color is a calming color and will make the environment peaceful and comfortable to read in.

When students are focused, they will show improvement in literacy skills (our classes focus on reading comprehension strategies.)

The books about basketball will gain the attention of students who love to play sports, the bilingual books will support students who are learning English as a second language, and the Ninja Life Hack Series books will help students with Social Emotional learning.

Since I teach 6th-8th grade students this means that the focus needs to be on helping students have a positive view of themselves, and when they get a classroom couch, with reading books that relate to them, they will see that what they need is important, and they deserve a good classroom environment. I know this reading center will help my students improve their literacy skills.
