Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning a foreign language can be so much fun in a multi-media classroom! My classroom rewards risk-taking students who perform for their peers, applaud each other's efforts, and sing along to songs we study! We act, we laugh, we collaborate, and we use lots of Spanish every day.
Many of my students are interested in careers in the medical, health, or scientific fields, and being able to learn practical Spanish is extremely important to them.
Our school has a strong foreign language program, and many students continue beyond the one mandatory year of language to take AP-level classes. My classes are essential to this flow. Our school is large, but retains a small school feel. Students are well-known by their teachers, and receive extensive academic and emotional support so they can graduate college and career ready. Seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and approximately thirteen percent receive special education services. Our 4-year graduation rate exceeds the citywide average (by almost 30 percentage points) and we have a terrific 4-year college acceptance rate.
My Project
Reading a novel written entirely in Spanish is a huge accomplishment for beginning language learners. It's rewarding to observe trepidation on students' faces when they hear the words, "we're going to read a novel in Spanish" turn to joy as we bring that novel to life. My students should read "Robo en la Noche". The novel is accessible to my third-year students and is instrumental in teaching students about the environment and the illegal tropical bird trade that exists in Costa Rica, as well as the groups that are working to curtail it. I will use the novel to expand upon students' knowledge of geography, climate, and the culture of Costa Rica. Actors, props, and costumes will help my numerous visual learners understand what is happening in the novel.
