By helping my students learn a foreign language, I hope to expand their world view and make them better equipped to compete in our multilingual society. It is essential for my students understand how the ability to communicate in another language can expand their world. Spanish is a common language in NYC. Today, one of my students recounted with pride how she was able to help a tourist who didn't speak English get to the right subway stop because she could communicate with him in Spanish! Many of my students come from high-poverty minority neighborhoods and struggle with literacy in English - either because they are English language learners or because they otherwise have low skills. I strive to make Spanish class the place where hey get a fresh start - the ability to learn a language from the ground up, no matter what their previous experience with school and language has been.
