My Students

Our students come from a low to medium-income area, with more than a third receiving free school lunch. We have a good number of refugees and migrants, and it is becoming more diverse every year. We also house a magnet program for gifted/talented. One of the three sixth grade classes is composed of students from around the district who tested into the program.

I teach the magnet program and am always trying to locate appropriate high-level resources that are appropriate for my class to use.

I have one class set of books, but need a few more sets to allow all students access.

My Project

It is clear that we need to reinforce good study habits and get kids excited about learning again. I have noticed gaps in reading, and less enthusiasm toward learning in the content areas. My goal is to encourage a love of learning by adding high interest reading, as well as more hands-on activities in science and social studies that could be done at home or in the classroom.

We have one set of class books, and having two more sets along the same theme, would help students do more deep, critical thinking.

I have also acquired some lab supplies, but every year it seems I notice that I am missing these particular pieces of glassware. Lastly, modeling clay is something I have used in both science and social studies. It would be nice to add to our class supplies in these ways.
