My school consists of TK-5th grade students, who come from low-income families. Many parents work more than one job and either do not have the skills or enough time to help support their child to their fullest potential.
Do you remember when your lightbulb turned on and you first learned to read?
This is the biggest milestone for first grade students. When that lightbulb comes on and they realize they are independent readers, their reactions are priceless. First grade is the year students must make the biggest jump in reading levels to prepare for all the reading they'll have ahead of them.
My classroom changed from a 5th grade class to a 1st grade class this school year! With such a huge age difference comes great changes that need to be made within the classroom. Also within this group of 24 students are different learning styles that need to be met in a variety of ways.
My Project
Dry erase pocket folders are such a useful tool in the classroom! They can be used across all subject areas, while helping to save paper at the same time. Students also love them because they provide students a different way of writing than the typical pencil and paper.
Reading and writing are the foundation to success!
Along with a different to show what they know using dry erase pockets, picture books are essential to any classroom! There are never enough books in a classroom. I will use the books in my project for class read alouds towards teaching different topics, such as different ways to read, diversity, and expectations in a first grade classroom, in a fun and engaging way.
