This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students regularly deal with trauma in many forms: poverty, homelessness, hunger, abuse, imprisonment of family members, etc. Their young minds often find it difficult to concentrate on their studies for any length of time.
All of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
Often, school meals are the only food they eat in a day. Concentration and putting forth the energy needed for learning is difficult, although they are curious. My students crave new experiences and information.
My students like to experiment with different types of technology and media. I love watching them make connections in our ELA center activities.
My Project
My students need book totes to help them carry their leveled books to various flexible seating options around the room. I have noticed that many of the kids will bring just one text with them when they are looking for a comfortable place to read and that ends up leading to off-task behavior.
I know that if my students brought several text choices to independent reading with them, they would reach for one book after another, staying on task.
Writing can be just as much of a challenge.
It never seems to fail that I also have a few students who struggle to write legibly. Dry erase white boards will help those who are not yet ready to handle lines and the magic board will serve as the next step for practicing writing using lines.
