My students need more experiences reading non-fiction high interest books at their reading level.
Have you ever felt frustrated because you could not understand what you were reading? Many of my students need a time in the day with high interest teacher directed materials at their reading level to achieve a higher level of comprehension.
Many of my students are English language learners who need access to books at their level.
The basal reader is often too difficult for them to comprehend. In addition, the basal reader consists of far more fiction stories than non-fiction. Research shows that English language learners can connect better to non-fiction reading. These students need an additional teacher directed group reading time during the day when they can read high interest non-fiction books at their level.
These books will boast my students' self confidence because they will be reading with meaning. The new Common Core Teaching Standards call for more reading of non-fiction books. My classroom is in great need of more non-fiction materials. As a teacher, I will be able to work in small groups reading appropriate materials that will motivated my students to want to read. My students will learn the joy of reading.
This project will impact my students by improving each student's English.
It will also ensure that each student will be engaged in his/her learning by feeling self-assured about reading.
