It quickly became the highlight of our Lit Circle to learn about this complex character. Not only did they thoroughly enjoy the narrative, but it also sparked an enthusiasm for reading and was connected to our Science curriculum- We were learning about the Earth and Sun at the same time! The engaging plot and relatable characters provided the perfect gateway for rich discussions, with students eagerly sharing their thoughts. We even learned about anthropomorphic characteristics in characters- that was a big word for us!\r\n\r\nOur class discussions explored various themes such as friendship, perseverance, and the power of technology, prompting students to think critically about the world around them.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the discussions, we brought the story to life through creative dioramas that showcased key scenes from the book. The students worked collaboratively in groups, using their imaginations to recreate their favorite moments. The dioramas not only allowed them to express their understanding of the book visually and also fostered teamwork and communication skills with their peers.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly thankful for your support, which has made a lasting impact on our classroom environment and our students' love for literature.","fullyFundedDate":1724263170787,"projectUrl":"project/expanding-our-classroom-library/8457824/","projectTitle":"Expanding Our Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Flynn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3517256_orig.png?crop=1592,1592,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1718573944689","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3517256"},{"teacherId":9570514,"projectId":8457748,"letterContent":"Thank you very much for buying a class set of the novel, \"A Long Walk to Water.\" We recently finished reading this novel and want to share how the book has impacted our learning. Whenever, I teach a novel, we begin by learning about the author, Linda Sue Park. My students were delighted to learn that she had a personal relationship with the main character of the book, Salva Dut. My students enjoyed tracing Salva's journey on the map provided in the beginning of the text. This map helped me to reinforce map skills as we were following Salva's journey away from the civil war in Sudan and toward safety in Ethiopia and later, Kenya. Students were able to develop empathy for Salva as he struggled, mostly alone, for years walking away from civil war in Sudan. After we finished reading the novel, we were able to write about the traits of the main characters, analyze the plot structure by creating a story timeline of key events and discerning the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. We also distinguished the different types of conflict in the story, drew the setting and its own impact on the story. Also after we finished reading the novel, we watched an interview between the author and Salva Dut, who now runs waterforsouthsudan.org. I think it is important for children to see characters and people, such as Salva Dut, who overcome great challenges to give back to their community. Thank You.","fullyFundedDate":1727981604006,"projectUrl":"project/readers-in-need-of-a-long-walk-to-water/8457748/","projectTitle":"Readers in Need of \"A Long Walk to Water\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. O'Donnell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9570514_orig.jpg?crop=380,380,x0,y84&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1718570670678","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9570514"},{"teacherId":9570514,"projectId":8596097,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supplying my Fifth Grade classroom with Folders and Math Quad Rule Notebooks for Math class. Here's a summary of how we are using the resources that you so generously provided. Please recall that Fifth grade is the last elementary grade before middle school and I think that teaching students how to organize their work is a crucial skill. This is because in middle school they will have different teachers for each subject, so it will be important for all students to have the organizational skills to keep up with the demands of middle school. This year, thanks to you, my students have different colored folders for their different subjects: Math, Literacy, Science, Social Studies and Take Home. This also helps me in knowing that each student has what they need to organize their papers for each subject. Thank You!\r\nFifth grade Math is rigorous for young minds. We spend most of the year adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, mixed numbers and decimals. We also multiply large whole numbers (3-4 digits each), study geometric figures and the coordinate plane.
