Many of my students are English language learners who need access to books at their level. The basal reader is often too difficult for them to comprehend. In addition, the basal reader consists of far more fiction stories than non-fiction. Research shows that English language learners can connect better to non-fiction reading. These students need an additional teacher directed group reading time during the day when they can read high interest non-fiction books at their level.
