William Arthur Ward wrote, "A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition." I can't think of another way to perfectly capture the attitude of my 26 third graders! My students live in north county San Diego, and come from a very wide socioeconomic range. These budding readers are constantly looking to make sense out of their world, and we spend a lot of time talking about how third grade is a time of maturity. Kids want to be responsible for themselves and this is the perfect age to start giving them more jobs as well as opening their eyes to different places and things. I consider it my job to help them to think about how to rely on themselves instead of other people to do everything for them. Books and literature are the key to these ideas.
My Project
Our kids are hungry for exciting and relatable titles that help to make sense of their world. These titles are current, relatable, and exciting for kids to read. The characters mean something to them. Our library is currently lacking and I see the listlessness in their eyes. I want to get some fresh titles in our class that will get them excited about reading and learning new characters. Additionally, we need a place to put it! These bins will help kids organize our current library, weed out some of the titles that are no longer current and excitng, and make way for your generous donations.
