Help me give my students a classroom library filled with diverse literature to captivate and inspire as well as help them understand the value of their struggles and uniqueness.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are vibrant, spirited, precocious, and brilliant, yet trapped by circumstances, skill deficiencies, and systemic faulty beliefs, which continue to hinder their innate and once insatiable love for learning! Many have lost their desire to complete high school due to feelings of frustration perpetuated by repeated failures. My students are disengaged due to poor attendance and feelings of discouragement. Unfortunately, their Title I neighborhood school, which is underfunded and understaffed only exacerbates this hopelessness and leaves little opportunity for high expectations and enriching experiences.
With the help of generous donors, I hope to build a classroom library which inspires individual choice, meets the needs of diverse learners and serves as a catalyst to make connections between the classroom and the world beyond.
Two of the greatest strategies a teacher can employ to help disengaged students are building individualized learning experiences and providing enrichment opportunities for building students’ sense of how to connect with the larger world.
The gift of this classroom library will likely be one of the most important tools in helping my most disengaged students.
When you provide a safe and inviting reading space to disengaged kids they are given the opportunity to participate and grow. My students are chronically absent, very easily distracted, and often off task from the lesson. They frequently speak of their lack of a safe and enjoyable reading space. In an effort to make positive relationships, I want to create this space for these students!
A library filled with culturally diverse and leveled literature will allow the students to get re-engaged with their reading.
Creating this positive environment allows me to give them the opportunity to become better readers. It will also help motivate them to attend school regularly. I strongly believe that having a reading space will help alleviate the chronic absenteeism. This would also help me to build positive relationships with students. They will be able to see that I want them to succeed socially, emotionally and academically. I want to encourage my students to come to school on a daily basis by offering them a space to read and practice the skills they have been taught!
