Providing snacks, incentives and personal care items during a voluntary after school remedial reading program, will draw interest and spur on regular attendance. I am asking students to stay after school to essentially learn to read. The high school students I teach are reading far below grade level with several students reading at a very basic level of letter/ sound identification. This low level of skill has clearly impeded their success and without remediation these students will continue to remain apathetic as they fail to thrive in the high school setting. My classroom needs to be more attractive than the fleeting, empty promises of the streets. Providing a safe learning environment with incentives will not only encourage attendance but ultimately foster the skill of reading, vital for individual freedom!
