This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are first graders in a k-5 elementary school in the city who have a love for learning! My students all come from many different backgrounds, including my students who are learning English as a Second Language. They all have one thing in common: they LOVE to read! In first grade, reading is a crucial part of our daily routine. My students have the opportunity on a daily basis to read with me, but also explore the library in our classroom to expand their interests and reading knowledge.
With students having various backgrounds, my mission is to ensure that my classroom library reflects my students' cultures- All of them!
I fully believe that every student deserves to have a meaningful educational experience regardless of outside challenges they experience. They come in to my room every morning ready to learn and deserve nothing but the best to ensure they are able to continue learning every day for the entire school year.
My Project
In first grade, books have a significant daily impact on my students. At this age, many of my students are exploring the world and beginning to find their interests. One way they explore the world is through reading.
One way to engage students in a lifelong love of literacy is to help them create personal connections with what they read.
My students deserve to have a classroom collection of books that celebrate who they are and the various backgrounds they come from! I am requesting a collection of various picture books to add to our classroom library.
These books will be used during countless whole-group lessons where students can apply their reading skills and learn about different cultures at the same time! These books will also be placed in the library during literacy stations allowing students to explore books that peek their interest. My mission is to create a classroom community based on mutual respect through communicating about our similarities and differences. Diversity should be promoted and celebrated!
