This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine you are 13 years old and sitting in a classroom. Your teacher just told said "pick a novel to read and be prepared to discuss it with your small group next week." Do you panic or do you know just what you will pick? For my students, panic would be their first thought.
My students are 8th graders who attend a very urban Illinois school.
The majority of students live below the poverty line. The influences in their life tend to not support reading and education. The majority of my students do not read as hobby. They have very limited life experiences outside of their school and home communities and because they do not read often, they can rarely imagine any life outside of their present situation.
My Project
The novels I have selected are a good variety of high-interest topics. It should be somewhat easy for my students to find a book to read and discuss in which they can relate. I plan to introduce each of the choices through a book talk. Then, allow groups to form based on a common interest in reading their selection. The literature circles will follow set protocol for discussing the novels during class time. My students rarely have the opportunity to read novels in class that are outside of the anthology because our school does not have these resources. When my students receive these books, their opportunity to discuss and make connections to the elements of literature they are learning about with increase greatly.
Your gift is essential to the quality of literacy education that I can provide to my students.
By providing these texts, you are impacting the lives of young adults now and in the future. My students are struggling with issues in their lives. Your wonderful gift to my class can help them discover that they are not the only ones that struggle through life.
