My students are 8th graders who attend a very urban Illinois school. The majority of students live below the poverty line. The influences in their life tend to not support reading and education. The majority of my students do not read as hobby. They have very limited life experiences outside of their school and home communities and because they do not read often, they can rarely imagine any life outside of their present situation.
