Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of my students come from low income, often non-English speaking homes. They are very eager to learn and are very appreciative of anything that is done for them. In many cases, my students are learning 2 or 3 languages at once because their parents speak a dialect, their peers speak Spanish, and their teachers speak English.
My students are very proud of their background and would love to be able to read some in their native language for enrichment.
My Project
Research has shown that occasional use of the first language helps improve the learning of the second language. Research also has shown that decreasing the affective filter helps increase academic success. Being able to read in Spanish will help my students feel connected to their home language and appreciated, which will lead to lowering their affective filter.
The books I am hoping to get are related to what students will be learning in their regular English classes and will reinforce their English instruction.
The students in the Spanish club that will be using these books will have the opportunity to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing; which are the 4 parts of learning a language.
