My students need books to improve their overall literacy. My incoming 2nd graders were my 1st Kinder class and need a new class library to start the year off strong!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A typical day in the LB State 49ers room consist of reading, reading, and more reading! In every block of our day, reading is at the core. By the end of the school year, I want them to be reading at a 3rd grade level. My biggest challenge is having enough books that are engaging.
It is said that "New Orleans has become a laboratory for education reform since Hurricane Katrina." Well I believe that my scholars are more than just an experiment.
They all have a bright future ahead of them, which can be attained through a love of reading and a quality literacy experience!
My scholars are an amazing group of 2nd graders who arrive at school each and every day ready to learn and face new challenges. From my initial meeting with them to the first day of school, I felt that it was my duty to foster their love for reading and instill in them the importance of literacy. They attend a public charter school in New Orleans, which is still transforming on a day to day basis due to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, along with being a part of a school system that has long been described as simply "inadequate." My scholars hail from low-income, single parent homes, with the exception of a few who have the support of both parents. But overall, these scholars are motivated!
My Project
Most of my scholars entered my class with skills far below their middle and upper class counterparts and must work that much harder to catch up. One skill that is definitely lagging is reading. If I can instill the importance of literacy and the joy that comes from reading a wonderful book early on, my scholars will definitely want to pick up a book rather than a television remote. And the gap that I alluded to, also known as the achievement gap, will begin to close with each and every one of my scholars. Because literacy transcends across every subject, my scholars will excel in reading, writing, math, science and all other academic subjects. I will be able to plan more class read-alouds and even allow scholars to check out books from our classroom library.
Not only will these books support our classroom library and read-alouds, scholars will be able to take home books each night!
The more access that my scholars have to books, the more that they can read and the closer we become to closing the achievement gap through literacy! It may sound cliche to say "reading is fundamental," however, reading is so fundamental to all other academic subjects and the more exposure my scholars have to books, the more likely they are to excel!
