Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Emergent kindergarten readers need help from read-along audiobooks to help them acquire reading skills such as comprehension and vocabulary. Kindergarten is a time when students are tackling the first steps to being lifelong readers and this tool will help achieve this goal.
My kindergarteners are eager, curious and active students.
They are in a bilingual Spanish/English dual-immersion program that is kindergarten through fifth grade. Half of the students are native Spanish-speakers and the other half are English-speakers. Together the students become bilingual and literate in both languages by the end of fifth grade.
At our school, 75% of the students are from low-income families and kindergarten may be their first exposure to books. Therefore it is imperative to give them the tools to appreciate literature and school to help them succeed in life.
My Project
The two collections of read-along books will help me teach my twenty-five kindergarteners to read in smaller groups and with a bit more customized reading challenges which is hard to accomplished with this large number of students. These collections will be instrumental in providing these kids the much needed early reading skills.
My classroom is large and the students come from diverse academic backgrounds.
The audiobooks will allow me to customize their reading and help them improve their reading skills and comprehension.
