My students need supplies such as an easel, markers, lapboards, laminating pouches, sticky notes and book bins to help them engage in Guided Reading instruction.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege of spending another year in third grade! I have a room full of seventeen, bright students who want to learn. Our school is a Title One, has high poverty and trauma and is an inner-city school where a majority of my students receive reduced price or free lunch. Everyday my students bring more than just a backpack to school, but also personal struggles along with their academic strengths and weaknesses. Our classroom is a collaborative and inclusive environment with over half of our students receiving Special Education services from the Exceptional Education teacher whom I co-teach with. I believe that with the right environment, materials and opportunities all of my students can learn and feel successful in my classroom.
My Project
Many of my students come to third grade not being able to read third grade material which makes Guided Reading so important! I chose materials that will help organize instruction and provide more engagement for my students.
Students need motivation to read when they are struggling readers.
That is why creating reading tool kits (using the boxes) with laminated task cards and passages will help attract their attention with brightly colored paper and ability to interact with dry erase. The easel will allow me to teach new skills, vocabulary, graphic organizers easily in a small group setting. All of these supplies will help create resources to help my struggling readers based off of Professional Developments I have attended and strategies from Jan Richardson.
I know my students can be amazing readers if they are given the tools to do so!
