Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I consider the entire student body to my students! I am my school's teacher librarian, and our school library is dynamic. The library is used for not only promoting literacy, but the space may be used for students who are writers one period and scientists the next. Our students range between 11-14 years old, the perfect age to hone in on foundational skills, such as organization and studying. In preparation for high school, many of our students are exploring their interests through our selection of electives, getting the extra help they need from teachers during our weekly tutorial periods, and checking out books on a regular basis.

To support the vision of our school, our library is about learning and exploration.

Students see the library as the hub of our school-- a place where everyone belongs! The library is a safe place for all students, so my goal is to maintain the integrity of our space, while also showing students the library is an another classroom on campus.

My Project

During the month of March, the United States celebrates Read Across America, and in an effort to celebrate and promote reading on our campus, my goal is to update our library's collection, and get books in our students' hands! Through displays, social media, and the most powerful tool, word of mouth, these titles are sure to be my students' new favorite books.

The selected titles fall in line with Read Across America's initiative of celebrating diversity.

It's imperative that our students not only see themselves in the books they read, but also gain new perspectives that differ from their own experiences. The selected books are middle school friendly, and published within the last 5 years-- ensuring the windows and mirrors reading experience for all students.
