Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever seen a Big Book? I had not see one either, until I became a teacher. They are children's books that are gigantic! Not only are the pictures enlarged, but the words are enlarged too. The large words make it easy for students to read. My students are delighted by the size of them!

My students are absolutely amazing (it's true)!

This is my ninth year teaching, but only my 2nd year teaching 2nd grade! I loved teaching 1st graders, but now I can't imagine teaching any other grade. My unique school strives to not only meet their academic needs but also places an equal importance on physical fitness, nutrition and parent involvement. We have an extended school day so that each student receives one hour of GYM and 25 minutes of recess. Our student breakfasts and lunches are catered and healthy. Many students enjoy our salad bar option! We also teach Nutrition to our students once a week so they are able to learn how to make healthy food choices and teach their parents about being healthy at home.

My Project

These fabulous Big Books are some of our class favorites! These are the authors and characters that captivate their attention during our daily read alouds and their imaginations during their self selected reading time. These are the books that my students read again and again with excitement and joy. It is amazing how focused learners will be if they are given a choice on what they want to read. The big books also come with adorable storytelling activities that will allow my students to retell the story with a buddy! The magnetic letter boards and pointers will also be used to engage learning at other literacy centers.

By providing my students with these fantastic, high-interest Big Books like The Napping House and The Cow that Went Oink, you will be directly contributing to their motivation to become passionate life-long readers!
