I have the privilege of teaching some of the brightest and most creative minds I’ve ever met. They amaze me daily with their abilities to think outside the box and come up with creative pieces to show off their knowledge. My students range in age from 15-19. Their interests range from comic book heroes to true crime detectives and everything in between.
They have a hunger for learning and crave relevant, high level engagement texts to sink their teeth into but don’t have the means to do this on their own.
This project will expose them to a variety of texts and allow me to differentiate the texts they read by their interests.
My Project
I want to be able to give my current and future students access to relevant and rigorous texts that relate their interests and challenge them to think beyond their current world views. Currently, the few class sets available on my campus are either extremely outdated or are currently being taught by the lower grade levels. They need to be invested in the novels they read in class and be able to make real-life connections! These books will help me to do just that- engage my students and hopefully turn them into life long readers.
Most of my students have not traveled outside the state but I want to be able to show them that with a good book you can travel the world and immerse yourself into different cultures, lives, experiences, and even worlds.
I will use these novels to show students these worlds beyond what they've imagined and allow them to realize the right book in their hands makes them unstoppable.
