My students never once asked, \"Why do we have to read this?\" and started asking, \"Do you have another one like this?\"\r\n\r\nWhen kids read about a life completely different from their own, it breaks down the \"us vs. them\" wall.\r\n\r\nThey don't just learn about someone else's culture or hardship—they walk in their shoes for the whole novel. They laughed with them, grieved with them, and rooted for them.
