Raise 150+ Trout in an Urban Special Education Classroom

Help me give my students with special needs the chance to raise 150+ trout in our classroom for the 2025-2026 year with tools and books to learn about water systems, fishing, through experiential hands-on STEM learning!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach in an urban, Title I school in a special education classroom, and we are raising trout in our classroom to release into local waterways at the end of the year. My students love STEM learning! We'll be raising trout together to release in our local river in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania! It's environmentalism and experiential!

Our tank and fish eggs are provided (they arrived mid January), but we need more aquarium-specific tools, science and trout books, and art tools and more to carry out these hands-on activities!

Included in this project are block printing supplies for making trout block prints to make thank you cards for people in the program, block prints to add to trout science journals, etc. Also included are many books about koi fish (which we compare to trout), trout books, trout art for the classroom, and relevant cleaning supplies for the aquarium. Batteries will help with our labeler to help label journals, parts of our trout tank setup.

This program and the supplies listed will help foster a love for learning through an immersive exploration of trout and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities.

Our goal is to create an engaging and educational environment where students can dive into the world of aquatic life while simultaneously developing essential STEAM skills.

Trout serve as fascinating subjects that allow the integration of various STEAM elements. From studying their life cycle (Science) to creating trout habitats (Engineering) and ELA/writing related to this program, this project will seamlessly incorporate multiple disciplines. Thanks for empowering our students to also improve our ecosystem!
