Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students in urban districts often have to walk to school in the morning. Bussing rules often times call for students within a certain radius of the school building to walk to and from school. Many times, these students have to walk in the rain, cold, or snow if their parents are working the mornings and cannot drop them off directly. Sometimes, these students can be homeless or in foster care and may lack access to adequate or clean clothing to protect them as they walk. Our district has an over 35% poverty rate which is expected to reach over 40% by the time the effects of COVID have fully settled in. Our population has suffered more than almost any other district in our state. They need help from teachers and staff to ensure they are warm enough to get to and from school, otherwise sometimes they decide not to show up. If it were you, and you were faced with having to walk in the rain or snow to come to school without dry clothing to keep you warm, would you do it?

This project requests umbrellas for students in need to keep them warm while they walk to and from our building in cold or rainy conditions and a calendar to track the upcoming rainy days.

Please support this project for students who need all the extra warmth they can get! Kids with cold hands can't type or write effectively. Kids with cold bodies are more focused on keeping warm than on keeping their grades up. Kids with cold noses keep their heads down to warm their noses up. Kids that walk in the rain get sick in the cold! Let's keep the students in our school as warm and well-cared for as we possibly can this year!
