Before I left on maternity leave, my Honors ELA students and I built a project around a small but mighty idea: give students a library of novels that remix the stories they think they know—fairytales, myths, Disney-adjacent classics—but flipped, fractured, modernized, and reimagined.\r\n\r\nThe books arrived just before I stepped out, and I cannot overstate how quickly they disappeared into backpacks, tote bags, and hands that usually need a bit of coaxing to choose a book. These titles became the backbone of our independent reading: high-interest, high-voice, high-engagement. Students argued passionately over which retelling got the mythology \"right,\" which villain backstory was actually justified, and which fairytale rewrite was better than the original (those debates got loud—in the best way).\r\n\r\nComing back this year, one of the first things students asked was whether the \"twisted fairytale shelf\" was still there. They remembered the books. They remembered their picks. That kind of ownership is priceless, and it happened because you helped us create a library that felt relevant, surprising, and theirs from day one.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students stories that challenged what they thought books could be—and for giving me a classroom culture that continued to thrive even in my absence. I'll be uploading photos soon so you can see exactly what your kindness built.","fullyFundedDate":1715382189266,"projectUrl":"project/fairy-tales-reimagined-sparking-imagina/8176607/","projectTitle":"Fairy Tales Reimagined: Sparking Imagination with Young Adult Twists","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ciresa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8525643_orig.jpg?crop=1226,1226,x89,y139&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683044726707","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-ciresa"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_109566","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":837,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":55,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":32,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":65,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 9","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":30.8,"schoolId":109566,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Trenton Ninth Grade Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Trenton Ninth Grade Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/trenton-public-schools/9th-grade-academy/109566"}
