Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Once a week students are expected to spend forty minutes on an online program that is now part of our curriculum. I was having difficulty with motivating them to do their best, so I based a competition around it. As a student masters a skill, the program rewards them with trophies which I use as an indicator of their progress. I've adopted the game of Mario Kart by letting teams choose their characters, providing a track for the race, and including elements of the game. Their advancement on the track is based on the number of trophies they earn. Students are able to run into an item box and spin for a surprise which lets their team move up spaces, block attacks, sabotage other teams, and earn small prizes. This is where the snacks come in.

My students are highly incentivized by the promise of a sweet or salty treat, and obtaining these snacks would give them greater opportunities to do so.

Eighth grade is a tricky time in adolescence, however I've already seen my students uniting for a common cause. I look forward to Wednesdays now more than ever and have noticed a change in students that are not usually so engaged. This will hopefully create a chain event where the feeling of community, competition, and a shared goal will inspire them throughout their academic journey, so help me give my students more of a reason to continue racing to the finish line!
