I teach first grade in a very low-income part of NYC. Our school is surrounded by housing projects and a homeless shelter. My students have very little in their homes and I try and provide as many experiences as I can for them within the classroom.

Since my students come from very low-income households, they have very few toys in their homes. Many of them do not even have crayons to color with at home! Therefore their only time to really experience active playtime is in school. Since they are in first grade and we have a very rigorous academic curriculum, they only play with toys twice a week for about 40 minutes. That is such a small amount of time for this age group!

I would like this precious playtime to be full of excitement and be worthwhile! Right now we have a few "quality toys", but I would really like for them to have some kind of experience with a doll house type of toy. When I saw this Melissa and Doug tree house I thought it was perfect! Both boys and girls would be SO excited to play with this toy!

By funding this project, you will give my students the opportunity to have a quality toy in their classroom! This will bring so much joy to my students each time we have play time in the classroom. Please make this possible!
