My students need quality literature to launch our Reader's Workshop program. They will be volume reading in books at their own personal level. Having engaging books available in my classroom for my students is imperative.
This year I will be teaching fourth grade. Our district is very diverse and we have approximately 60% English language learners.
Our students come from a wide range of different socioeconomic backgrounds.
Over 60% of our students receive a free lunch. Our school also has a wide range of academic levels. Our school supports this wide range with programs like our Response to Intervention Reading Program (RTI.) Teachers regularly meet to look at student learning, assessments, and examine our practice.
I am inspired every day by the young people we serve. Many of our students face adversity in their lives yet come to school eager to learn each day. Our families come from diverse backgrounds and come together to support and celebrate these kids. Also, our staff works tirelessly and passionately to bring quality instruction to our students. I'm so very proud to be a part of this community.
My Project
Each year I expand my classroom library to get quality books into the hands of my students. This year we are launching a new curriculum called Readers' Workshop. Each student will be volume reading books at their reading level. They need access to a lot of books at a variety of levels. They may read multiple books each week or even day! This DonorsChoose.org project includes a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.
I would like to focus on expanding our classroom library to include books that teach about historical figures, science topics, and reflect my wonderful students' beautiful diversity.
These books will help my students stay motivated as readers. Good books inspire kids. Having enough books in our classroom ensures that students can find books that are right for them, as well as books that interest them. Research shows that getting students to spend a lot of time reading books that are at their level is one of the most crucial factors in reading growth.
Please help me get quality books into these eager readers' hands.
