My student is a bunch of hands-on visual learners. The more I can get stuff in their hands or front of their faces, the more interested they are in the curriculum. More importantly, it makes them passionate about the topics I present to them.
My middle-grade students pass on their passion for STEM to the lower grades by mentoring and modeling the proper way to utilize the Engineering Design Process when trying to solve a problem.
My Project
As you notice, there does not seem to be a lot that goes together in this list of materials. So let me be your guide and tell you how these items will help my students visualize the curriculum they are being asked to learn. Multiple times throughout the year, we discuss currents. The mica powder, baggies, and sparkling water bottles are a great way for the students to research what arthroscopic fluid is and then create their own model to show currents. The additional bottles and planting medium will be used during our spheres of the Earth unit. Their task will be to design and create a self-sustaining environment using what they know about the 4 spheres of Earth.
So many of my students learn by seeing and doing the curriculum in action.
If you have ever had to teach about rocks and minerals to 7th graders, you will understand why putting a rock they can break open and see crystals inside is much more interesting than watching a video or reading about it. They also have lots of random electronics around the room that they consider to learn about how they function hence the screwdriver with multiple bits and the tape. Lastly, their classroom pets need some upgrades. The timers are on the fritz, and a couple of lamps are starting to flicker.
