My student have shown me already, after just over a month of school, that if they can touch it and see it they will learn it. Even with technology this group likes to put things in their hands to see and feel how stuff works. The cross section earth models will be a great tool to do just that.
We have technology, what we do not have much of are posters and tangables. Having posters around the room will give my students the opportunity to move around.
I want to be able to put them in small groups and send them from poster to poster to discuss events on the world that are currently going on. My group thrives with getting up and manipulating objects. Seeing what works and what does not. The mini seismographs will be a huge hit with the kids when we get to earthquakes. You can talk and show videos but nothing beats being able to work with the tool in class and change the variables to see the differences. It will make seeing magnitude much more relevant. We want to use the landforms demonstration kit for a lab that has the students making their own kits out of shoe boxes. This will give us a working example to learn with before they build it with their groups.
