My Project

Putting the WOW Factor in STEM will provide hands-on experiences designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and create memorable learning moments through visually striking scientific demonstration projects. These lessons will be used to teach 18 classes of students from Kindergarten to the 8th grade.

The grant will fund materials for two high-impact activities—the iodine clock reaction and wave visualization using tuning forks, together we can transform abstract STEM concepts into experiences students can see, hear, and feel.

The iodine clock reaction is a powerful way to introduce students to chemical reactions, reaction rates, and scientific prediction. As the solution suddenly changes color, students experience an authentic sense of surprise and excitement—the “wow” moment—that naturally leads to inquiry. Students make hypotheses, observe cause-and-effect relationships, and discuss variables such as concentration and temperature. Because the reaction is dramatic yet safe when properly prepared, it is ideal for repeated demonstrations across multiple class groups, allowing hundreds of students to benefit from the same materials.

The wave visualization activity brings physics concepts to life. Using tuning forks in combination with trays of water, ping pong balls, and a strobe light, students can clearly observe wave motion, frequency, and energy transfer. What is normally invisible—vibrations and wave patterns—becomes immediately visible. This multisensory approach supports diverse learning styles and helps students build lasting conceptual understanding rather than relying on memorization alone.

Together, these activities emphasize inquiry, observation, and critical thinking while fostering excitement about science. Funding these supplies will allow students to engage directly with real scientific phenomena, encouraging curiosity, confidence, and a positive association with STEM learning. By investing in Putting the WOW Factor in STEM, we help create classroom experiences that students will remember long after the lesson ends—experiences that inspire future scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers.
