Putting Soxs on Chairs for Peace While Creating

My students need building and art materials such as pipe builders, pencils, and chair sox.

My Students

Our school has suffered from a large amount of budget cuts, including an Art Program. Having Art/creative time in our room means having materials with which to create! Our school supplies budget has also suffered, so we would love to work and create quietly with new "sox" on our tables and chairs.

My students are kindergarten students like you'll find anywhere in the country.

They love to draw, build, color, write, read, and be read to. Most are from families in lower socio-economic standings and several come from single-parent or foster homes. They attend a public school and some have already been in multiple schools due to moving, economics, and other reasons. Ours is considered an inner-city/urban school that has among its student population children from many different areas of the city. About one-third ride the bus to school, many attend a day care before and/or after school, and some of those do not actually get into their own home and bed until late at night. Therefore, some of these children are tired before they even get to school in the morning! Many do not have a lot of or any school supplies to speak of and rely almost totally on me or the school to provide supplies for them. I believe they deserve some "color", quiet, and fun in their life!

My Project

One of the drawbacks to having no Art program outside of the classroom is that we have to have our own Art activities IN the room. The noise level can become intolerable when chairs are falling or sliding across the floor while students are creating pictures or buildings. The "chair sox" (tennis balls) on chair and table "feet" will make a great deal of difference to the creative minds at work, making the room quieter, easier on the mind and ears, AND on the nerves. The art supplies and building materials I have on my wish list will give these children tools with which to be creative, build things, and have some peace and quiet at the same time.

I believe that every student should feel safe and secure in their school, especially in their classroom.

A safe, colorful, and quieter place to work and play is what I ask for my students. My project is very important because it would afford my students a great amount of peace, quiet, and some materials with which to build, draw, and write without the feeling of chaos around them. The chair and table "sox" are of primary importance and the art materials will definitely add to the great outcome.
