Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a fifth grade teacher at a new, small public school in Oakland called Think College Now, or TCN. At TCN we believe that all students, regardless of socio-economic background, deserve access to college, and that for them to be competitive with their more affluent and privileged peers, they need to have a strong academic foundation. That's where you come in. I'm committed to giving my students a strong foundation in Science, but as a new, small school, we're somewhat lacking in materials. Our school district provides us with textbooks, but with over 2/3 of our students still learning English, the textbook just isn't accessible. I'm committed to making my Science instruction exciting and interesting, and a textbook that reminds students of their reading deficits won't do the job. Rather than rely on textbooks, I'd like to get some books about the subjects we're studying in Science this year--the water cycle, weather, the rock cycle, volcanoes, earthquakes, electricity and magnetism, states of matter, the human body, environments, food chains, photosynthesis, and basic chemistry. The books I'm requesting are kid-friendly, have high quality diagrams and pictures, and will help build students' academic knowledge and vocabularies. These texts will provide context and depth to the hands-on experiences that bring Science to life in a way that the textbook just isn't. Help me teach my students to understand, question, and explore the world that they're inheriting!
