I need to attend the mindSpark Social-Emotional Resilience and Empathy training so I can improve my knowledge of mindfulness techniques and apply them in a classroom setting.
Our school serves approximately 540 students in grades K-6. Additionally, we house a pre-school varying exceptionalities classroom, primary and intermediate varying exceptionalities classrooms for students with behavior difficulties, and primary and intermediate varying exceptionalities classrooms for students with learning difficulties. Approximately 75% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and are considered economically disadvantaged. During the 2017-2018 school year, our school earned a school grade of 'C'.
During the 2018-2019 school year, we took on the challenge of implementing a school-wide social-emotional learning curriculum-one of the first schools in our district to undertake such a daunting task.
As a school, we have already seen a decrease in discipline referrals. We are in the beginning stages of implementation and are excited to see the positive impact our efforts have on the social-emotional development of our students as well as on their academic growth.
My Project
It is no secret that teachers have a high burn out rate, especially those who work with students that require the most support academically and emotionally. MindSpark realizes that by putting educator's social-emotional well being first, our students and our schools will reap the reward.
This two-day institute will focus on improving my social-emotional competence as an educator so that I can use this knowledge to support myself, our students, and my fellow educators.
As an aspiring educational leader, having the ability to deeply understand my own emotions is essential for providing effective emotional support for my staff. This institute will allow me to grow my skills and become a more effective leader.
