My Students

Second grade is very fun and satisfying grade to teach. I am always amazed at the way they strive to make sense of the world. While second graders want to make their world as orderly and safe as possible, they also need to have opportunities for student choice.

My students are a unique group of amazing kids that deserve the best learning experience I can provide.

I want to give them different options for seating in my classroom. When students are given the freedom to choose the seat that is best for them, a culture of trust and community is formed. The students are more engaged in the lesson and take more ownership over their education when they are able to be responsible for making positive choices. Brain-based research has found that when students are comfortable in their environment and have opportunities to move, they retain more of what they learn.

My Project

Flexible seating is an incredible way to give students a choice of where they learn and work best. In many ways flexible seating options motivate students to learn and to follow positive classroom procedures and expectations. Students feel empowered by having choices and control over their environment. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed.

A 2016 story on Edutopia stated that, giving students choices about their physical classroom space teaches them higher-order thinking skills.

Giving these choices requires introducing higher-order thinking skills, like problem-solving, and emotional skills, like conflict resolution. The value in fostering turn-taking and patience is so important, a life skill that is beneficial in this day and age.
