Even though the vast majority of students at my inner-city high school read below grade level, the members of the Book Club are passionate about reading. Our Book Club is in its first year, and these students have an awe-inspiring commitment to building their vocabulary. They want to read, read, read!
I teach at a low-resource, high-needs school, and my students face high-stakes tests and intense test preparation. Many of them read below grade level, which makes the process much more intimidating (and less interesting). I started a Book Club this year to help encourage students to see reading as something that could actually be fun, and the 17 members of the Book Club are 100% enthusiastic about our club's purpose. They want to read all genres of literature and expose themselves to new ideas and new vocabulary. The problem is, we need books. I teach at a school where about 80% of the students are on Free and Reduced Meals, meaning that most of my students can't afford to purchase their own copy every month. Since our school library also has limited resources, we currently don't have the means to get sets of books for our club.
"Push" is a riveting and truthful novel for teenagers that combines prose and poetry. My students have endured many hardships in their young lives. So has the protagonist of "Push," a best-selling novel told from the point of view of an illiterate, brutalized Harlem teenager. Though none of my students have yet read the book, they've heard the buzz about it and enthusiastically requested that we make it our next novel.
Your donation will make it possible for the members of the Book Club to PUSH themselves to build literacy skills. Together, we can empower these students to view reading as a fun, enlightening, and exciting activity. Please, help bring literature alive for my students.
