My Students

I teach kindergarten at Redwood Elementary School, a Title I school in Southern Oregon. Our room is a blended community of learners from many different backgrounds and resources. Covid has left our young learners at such a disadvantage and lacking the essential social and emotional skills previously acquired in daycare and preschool. This year especially, my students are aching for connection; they love playing games and interacting with each other on any level. As their kindergarten teacher, I feel an incredible sense of responsibility to start these students with the best foundation possible so they can become life-long learners and make an incredible contribution to the world some day!

My Project

During the past few difficult COVID years in our school, so much of the fun, cooperative, interactive, social activities we do have been put on pause. This year we have some freedoms to connect and interact in person and teach children how to communicate, interact, play, have conversation and just be kids. What better way to do this than through play. Many of our students were three when the pandemic hit and have never been in a formal preschool or even child care setting. These resources may look like toys and games, and yes they are, however these games will help foster for many of these students their first real school connections and social relationships outside of their home environment. I want all my students to learn how to play in a purposeful way, through sharing, taking turns, communicating, problem solving and having fun! These resources will make that possible. My kindergartners love building puzzles, and playing games during our choice time. I would love nothing more than to give them a few more games and activities to help facilitate their social and emotional growth through this important play.
