My Project

My pre-K classroom is home to a small group of three to five preschoolers with developmental delays, and they bring more curiosity, determination, and joy to every day than I could ever put into words. Each of them is working hard on the skills that come easily to other children — asking for help, playing beside a friend, staying with an activity long enough to discover what it can do. Right now, our outdoor space offers them very little to explore, which means we're missing one of the richest learning environments a young child can have.

Outdoor play is where my students' biggest goals — communication, group play, and engagement — truly come to life.

A scooter builds core strength and coordination while creating natural moments to practice taking turns. A sandbox with built-in seats gives us an accessible, shared space where children who need extra support can dig side by side, and buckets, shovels, sand trucks, and diggers invite the back-and-forth of cooperative play while drawing out language like "more," "dig," and "my turn."

The airplane teeter-totter may be my favorite of all, because it simply can't work with just one child — it takes two, which makes it one of the most powerful communication tools a playground can offer. Each of these resources turns ordinary outdoor time into a chance for my students to reach for the very goals we work on every day. Together, they will transform our playground into a place where these children grow, connect, and thrive.
