Protecting Our Sound: Replacing Instrument Cases for Our Marching Band

My Project

Project Summary

Our high school marching band is seeking support to replace damaged and worn instrument cases that no longer safely protect student instruments during rehearsals, performances, competitions, and travel.

Many of our current cases are cracked, broken, missing handles, or no longer provide adequate protection for the instruments students rely on every day.

New instrument cases will help students transport and store their instruments safely while preserving the quality and longevity of the equipment. By providing durable and reliable cases, our students will be able to focus on performance, teamwork, discipline, and musical growth without worrying about damaged instruments.

Our Historic Music Program

FDHS has a rich and historic legacy rooted in academic excellence, leadership, and musical achievement. As one of the oldest historically Black high schools in the nation and the first high school established for African American students in Maryland, Douglass has long served as a cornerstone of education, culture, and community in Baltimore.

Today, our music students continue that proud tradition through marching band, concert band, jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, and other performance opportunities. The music program gives students a place to grow artistically, develop discipline and leadership, and represent their school and community with pride.

The Problem We Face

Many of our current instrument cases have seen years of heavy use and are no longer dependable. Cases are cracked, latches are broken, handles are falling apart, and interior padding has worn down. During marching season, instruments are constantly transported between school, buses, and performances.

Without proper protection, instruments are at risk of damage from weather, accidental drops, and transportation. Repairs can be costly and leave students without instruments for rehearsals and performances. Some students are currently carrying instruments in cases that barely close or provide little support.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
