Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students in my classes participate in a program called Eco-School, where they identify areas where our school lacks in sustainable practice. This year, my students have identified our school as lacking in green space, biodiversity, and sustainable food options. To combat this sustainability issue, my students are researching various biodiversity attracting options for urban areas. One thing students wished to create a pollinator protection initiative. They started a butterfly garden and wish to participate in the Save the Bees! movement.

The FlowHive honey extraction beehive and beekeeping bundle will allow me to create a beekeeping habitat for students that they can show compassion to a critical native species while watching and learning about the ecological benefits of bees, getting valuable education in urban agriculture, and best of all they can enjoy the benefits of locally and sustainably sourced honey.

We are requesting this model of beehive because it is safe and easy for honey extrusion, comes with a beginners course in beekeeping, and will provide a reliable source of year-round honey that students can have in class. Students will be able to watch the bees in livestream, research the benefits of bees for habitats (especially urban environments) and learn the benefits of protecting our pollinators. Most importantly, students will realize the social-emotional and mental health benefits of being able to have and harvest sustainable, ecologically focused food sources.
