Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the pleasure of teaching young, middle-school minds in an urban setting. This upcoming year, I am assigned a sixth grade classroom with two distinct audiences: one General Education class and three ESL/Bilingual classes.

Increasing parental and family involvement is crucial and imperative to the academic and social/emotional success of our students.

Our school is a daily home for 873 students thus far with 74% of all students being Hispanic/Latino descent. We have 267 students presently in our Bilingual and English as a Second Language programs. This makes up 31% of our student population. There are approximately 80 "newcomers" so far enrolled that do not speak English at all! School may be the only structured and stable setting that they have presently to learn English-Speaking skills and to raise their academic abilities. Parents often do not participate in school activities or parent teacher conferences due to the language barrier.

My Project

Having heard of the Innovation Challenge by the Carnegie Corporation of New York a day before it went live, I realized that creating a project to increase parental engagement at our school community was not a task that could pull off by myself overnight. Hence, it has taken several weeks of collaboration among my colleagues and I to devise a plan for 2019-2020: Monthly Parent-Student Activities ranging from a Hispanic Heritage Expo with dinner provided to over 225 families, Parent-Student English Conversation Lessons, Movie Nights, Mother-Daughter/ Father-Son nights, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Rewards Day: Plays, Dances, Sing-a-Longs, Interviews, Read-Aloud Fun, Technology Cafe and Family Swim Evenings. We also have a lead for teachers to volunteer to take Spanish Classes for a fee.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve parental engagement in our school community, but enable an increase of student attention and focus, higher grades and test scores, greater social skills, better reported behavior, easier adaptation to school and greater persistence in post-graduate education.

You will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement!

Reading and writing diagnostics have been administered and a baseline has be set. Our focus metric will be to gather evidence of Lexile Score increases. Lexile Scores are a thermometer of what grade level a student is reading on. Also, we will be keeping data on which parents are attending the workshops and their frequency of attendance. Student and parent interviews will be held to rate their perception of school engagement/culture as well as to obtain feedback of our newly founded program. Also, student's daily classroom attendance will be recorded.

It should be an exciting year to say the least! I know that we are all looking forward to an explosion of positive, measurable outcomes that will improve the quality of our stakeholders lives.
