My Students

I teach 50 amazing fourth-graders from Bridgeport, CT, in two classes. They come from many different communities and backgrounds and bring an amazing variety of interests, passions, and experiences with them into the classroom. My students are avid fans and participants of sports like gymnastics, football, softball, basketball, and soccer; they speak languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Bengali; and they love books, dance, comics, art, and more.

My students also have wide-ranging reading abilities, which is why an extensive and diverse library is so essential for their collective growth.

Academically, we have students who are already reading on a middle school level, as well as students who are still working on the decoding skills that will help them read more challenging, grade-level texts. Regardless of current skill level, however, all 50 are deeply invested in learning and love coming to school (both classes have had stellar attendance, and our school had the highest attendance in the school district last month), so these books will be an amazing resources for them.

My Project

Having a projector in the classroom will allow students to experience a more efficient classroom that is filled with more learning (more diverse material and a greater possible amount)! Right now we only have a projector that can be seen if you are within five feet, which is unrealistic for the 25 students who need to be viewing it at one time. This has meant that we waste time in trying to transition students to a place where they can all see, but more often means that we have to lean on other ways to convey information. Unfortunately, writing on the board limits the kind of materials that I can present (no pictures, no videos, no powerpoints, and so on), but more importantly takes up a lot of time that could be spent more effectively if I could rapidly display things to the whole class.

This projector will allow my students to experience everything that comes with the digital availability the internet and a screen: explorational videos, engaging powerpoints, and mind-opening learning with other media.
