Students are able to read along with their classmates, participate fully in discussions, and develop a stronger sense of independence and confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nThrough these novels, my students are practicing important 4th grade reading skills, including identifying themes and main ideas, describing characters and how they change, making inferences, using text evidence to support their thinking, and learning new vocabulary through context. More importantly, they are discovering that reading can be exciting, meaningful, and something to look forward to.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a very active experience. Students read independently, with partners, and together as a class. We stop to make predictions, ask questions, discuss characters and important events, and share our reactions to the story. I especially love hearing students use evidence from the book to defend their ideas during our conversations.\r\n\r\nThe new novels have been especially exciting for students who are sometimes hesitant to read. Having their own copy to hold, follow along with, and return to has helped make reading feel more accessible. I have also loved seeing students recommend parts of the story to one another and get excited to talk about what they are reading.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped create a classroom where students can grow not only as readers, but also as thoughtful communicators and curious learners. My 8th graders recently completed a unit around \"Maus\" during which they came to class excited to read and discuss each day.\r\n\r\nWith a variety of reading levels in the classroom, \"Maus\" allowed my classes to have a shared experience where we learned how to read a graphic novel, draw inferences from images, and analyze the creator's artistic decisions. The novel allowed us to build their reading skills by analyzing character motivations and how writers convey tone and mood to the reader.\r\n\r\nWe also built background knowledge about the Holocaust, analyzed how Hitler came to power, and discussed the psychology behind obedience to authority figures and groupthink. This allowed students to then extend their critical thinking skills and make connections to other events in history, such as the Trail of Tears, as well as issues and movements we experience today.\r\n\r\nI am excited to begin planning units around \"Summer of the Mariposas\" and \"One Last Word\" that stretch students' analytical and critical thinking skills.
