Projecting Academic Success in Rural Hawai`i

My students need a projector as a fundamental means for integrating technology into the classroom.

My Students

Designing 3D animations in PPT to help students visualize shapes; deepening student understanding by supplementing lessons with video clips; displaying Excel tracking data to invest students in their own academic progress; All brought to you by the power of the projector.

I am an 8th grade math teacher in rural Hawaii.

The educational disparity here is tangibly evident; it would require no more than a visit to schools on each coast of the island to see it. The differences in money, resources, and other socioeconomic repercussions create an awfully unlevel playing ground for educational opportunity. The school my students attend is both underfunded and under resourced in comparison to the schools across the island. Regardless of the obstacles, our children are wonderful. They are brilliant, curious, and eager to learn. With a fostering learning environment, they have all the potential in the world to succeed. Many of the students live on the coastal front and enjoy surfing, body boarding, and swimming in their free time. Our popular school sports include football and basketball. Many students take pride in our fine arts program and are frequently involved in creating films, writing poetry, and reading literature. They truly are wonderful.

My Project

A projector in the classroom opens so many doors of technological opportunity. Through the lack of state funding and the rural nature of our community, many of the classrooms lack the technology to keep students on pace with the ever modernizing world around us. A projector provides a technology access point; it exposes children to learning beyond the chalkboard. In the past, I have utilized PowerPoint animations to show kids how to visualize the creation of 3D shapes. I have also displayed Excel tracking data and charts on a daily basis to invest them in their own academic progress. This has been a crucial investment technique for my students. I have also used a projector to show videos that demonstrate the real-life relevancy of the day's academic material. Even more, I have used the projector to show Java applets demonstrating how to simplify algebraic equations. The applications are endless. I would build a stand and screen. All I need is the projector.

Using a projector in the classroom has the endless benefits of allowing students to be exposed to a variety of technologies.

It also creates the opportunity for providing multiple modes of learning, which is a proven technique to enhance student learning. Even more so, you would be helping out a teacher, a school, and a whole lot of students in need. The projector will be donated to the school and will NOT be my future possession. It is all for the kids.
