Manga lovers Oscar, Yuliana, Dania and Jose, are the new leaders of our manga club. These are great kids, and willing to go the extra mile to grow their manga club.
These wonderful students radiate a passion for manga. I have a small manga collection in my classroom, but these students want to go school-wide to share their love of manga, and start a manga club that meets twice a week during lunch, and weekly after school. My students are mad about the art and storytelling of manga. We need more manga along with pencils and markers to make our own manga.
To be founders of a club takes initiative, collaboration, creativity and leadership, all skills needed for the 21st Century. These hard-working students have already decided on the name of the club: "Project Manga." Next, they will need to publicize the club, set the meeting time, recruit the club adviser (me), create a flyer/sign-up sheet, stay organized, and lead the way.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is to spread the word about manga by creating a club, Project Manga. We want to inspire people to read books with a different style of reading, like manga from Japan. Manga started in Japan in the 12th Century! We also want to learn more about how to draw manga, and teach others how to draw in that style.
The way we will help is to make sure we get the word out about our club. We want everyone to use the materials we will get from this project. When we meet, everyone can use the art supplies and read all of the manga books. We are also going to have discussions about the stories. As our teachers always tell us, reading builds your brain!
This project is important to our school community because it will give students a chance to read something new and learn a new way to draw. Giving kids a chance to use nice art supplies is especially important for those who can't afford to buy their own. This project is also important because it can help the future of manga writers and artists like me, because I want to be a professional at drawing manga.
