Project LCD Projector

My students need a LCD projector to access vital technology-related skills that will help them compete in the job market.

My Students

Nikki Giovanni wrote a poem after the Virginia Tech tragedy; part of the poem sticks with me: "We are better than we think and not quite what we want to be. We are alive to the imagination and the possibility." This project request is about the possibilities a projector would bring to my classroom.

I have been teaching for five years at an urban high school that is culturally and linguistically diverse.

Most of my students are from the inner-city, and the majority speak another language at home besides English. Our school's demographics are also diverse, with a high percentage of Latino, African American, and Asian students. Many of our students are receiving a free or reduced lunch every day. My students constantly amaze me with their intuitive knowledge, their curiosity for learning and their commitment to social justice. (They can also make me laugh!) One thing that especially stands out is that despite the lack of supplies, and the disenfranchised California public school system, my students make the most of every opportunity afforded to them. They apply for scholarships, sign petitions, hold blood drives, and run for office. They recognize the discrepancies and strive to change them. I feel empowered to teach them and I try to empower them to impact their community.

My Project

I could best meet the needs of my students, and the state standards, if I had the technology that reinforced my teaching techniques. With a projector, I could show news videos from the New York Times and PowerPoint presentations on my board. I could also model Internet research techniques. Last year, I was committed to infusing technology into my classroom in a more real way, so I borrowed an LCD projector from a friend for a unit on Aristotle's rhetoric. One memory stands out in my mind. My students watched a homemade film on YouTube from the projector. The film featured an 11-year-old boy giving a persuasive speech about abolishing the n-word. My classroom door was open, and the sound was up. I looked around the room and saw all eyes on the board. I noticed other students crowding around my door from outside in the hall. Watching that film inspired my students to write their own persuasive essays about topics they cared about and to think twice about ever using the n-word again.

This project will make a difference because it will give my students the opportunity to make their own presentations using the projector.

This LCD projector will be used in all of my classes by all of my students-around 150 each year. The projector is the tool, but the steps to be able to use that tool, I will have to teach. Of course, I will use the tool to teach the tool! I will also use this donation for teaching my content area and will focus on helping students gain necessary career skills.
